Challenges women face in sports

According to Google Trends, more people are looking up Leticia Bufoni than Gabby Douglas right now. And if you’re wondering why that is, think about it: what did Douglas do wrong exactly?

Well, she made the mistake of not supporting the fictional narrative that women in sports need to support each other. Douglas didn’t take it well when a reporter asked her about “the awesome responsibility you [Gabby] have as a role model for young girls everywhere” during an interview at the Olympics and replied: “I’m not a role model.

This quick answer was picked up by every media outlet and used as evidence that Douglas hated being famous or whatever. The problematic part is that it completely disregards what she said before: “I just want to inspire people to be the best they can be.” She always claimed that her Olympic gold medals were dedicated to “all mothers out there who’ve been through a lot with their kids.”

Her answer was misinterpreted and used to confirm that “girls can’t get along”. To make things worse, she also became the target of hateful tweets like this:

The same happened to Leticia Bufoni when someone accused her of being a way better skater than Douglas. She replied with class: “I’m sorry I don’t know who Gabby Douglas is ??? if it’s gymnastics you are talking about !” The tweet was immediately used as evidence that women in sports don’t support each other. Someone else even went so far as calling her an “irresponsible feminist” for not appreciating what Douglas did at the Olympics.
