The Beginning Of Skate After School

In the beginning, this program started at a minimal level. The people involved in it collected the old materials from their friends or skate shops. The social media helped a lot in expanding this community. It provides transparency to the people who donated their stuff. The persons who donated anything felt happy after they saw how their donations were helping children. Then, the founder decided to transform this small program into a big Non-profit organization. Now, the program is getting funds from various sources. It includes personal donations, private foundations, and federal grants from School.

Initially, only three people founded this project. However, now, around 25 to 30 volunteers are working to promote this project. Moreover, there is a board of directors to make plans and strategies for the program.

The program mostly works with low-income, Title 1, elementary schools. It is because they want to help the children belonging from lower socio-economic backgrounds mostly. They wanted the kids from 2nd to 6th grade, including both the genders. Moreover, their schools are home to different refugee populations. Hence, they got a student from multicultural groups.

Aim Of The Program

One of the co-founders named Ryan Lay said that their aim is not to produce the next levels of skaters. They also not have the motive to operate a skate school. The main reason to work this program is to give mentorship to the kids through an enjoyable activity. The skateboarding will help to develop the physical as well as mental abilities of the child. However, it doesn’t mean that they are not enhancing the skills of their students. One of their students named Issac has not even stepped on the board before joining the School. Now, he has grown his talents very much in the last few years.

Moreover, they are also providing a core value curriculum called GRIP to their kids. The mentorship program has aimed to give the values of generosity, respect, etc. to the kids. It can be beneficial for children to have a good life.

It also helps to build the skateboarding community in their region. Hence, this program is not only helping students but also skate shops, teachers, volunteers, etc. Empowering children is essential to develop any country. The reactionary tendencies baked into skateboarding can help to bring a positive change in society. According to the founders, they do not know how to grow the program. However, they have started it with good intentions, and hence, it grows.
